Canoeing and Camping in August 2016
Canoeing on the Wisconsin River
2016-08-6-7 Five AM on August 6th our son, Charles, along with his two kids Elijah (11) and Millie (7) joined seventeen others in our church parking lot to drive up near Sauk City, WI where we launched canoes for a trip down the Wisconsin River. The plan was to have lunch on a sandbar around noon (we launched about 9am) then paddle a little further and overnight tent camp on another sand bard. Then on Sunday, after breakfast and "Church" we would paddle a short distance for lunch on a sandbar and finally end the trip with a final short paddle. The entire trip, which ended near Spring Green, WI covered about sixteen miles. Just a short time after launching we spied at least two, some said three Bald Eagles which was fun and kind of took our focus off ourselves and heavily loaded canoes to the adventure of it all.
It didn't take long to realize that the MAJOR FEATURE of a canoe trip is paddling! A second feature almost as prominent is sun, at least for us! God blessed us with two absolutely beautiful days with |
mild temperatures, both day and night and a steady but moderate breeze which kept the bugs away. I suspect from the kids point of view the most important thing was that the water near our overnight sandbar was the perfect temperature and depth for them to play in it non-stop. And for me the spectacular sunrise Sunday morning was really special.
